| Consumers Council stresses strong measures on price control | | | Early Times Report Jammu Jan 29: The first meeting of newly constituted State Level Consumers Council assigned the job of watching the consumers rights and escalation of prices of essential commodities was held here today.
The meeting was chaired by Minister for Consumer Affairs & Public Distribution System(CAPD) and Transport Qamar Ali Akhoon who is also the Chairman of the Committee.
The Minister of State for CAPD, Transport and Vice Chairman of the Council, Mr. Shabir Ahmed Khan was also present in the meeting.
Threadbare discussion was held on various matters related to price escalation of essential commodities and checking practices of hoarding, profiteering and over charging.
All the members gave their valuable suggestions for controlling the prices of essentials and edible goods, besides ensuring plying of smooth transport in the cities as well as rural areas.
Akhoon appreciated the members for airing their views regarding streamlining working of the department and ensuring protection of the rights of the consumers. He said fresh measures are being taken to protect the rights of the consumers and nobody would be allowed to cheat the consumers. He said rates of essential commodities fixed by the Government would be enforced strictly both in urban and rural areas.
The Minister said that CAPD department has been made accountable by making it mandatory upon the authority to monitor action taken report of market checking squads.
The Minister said though the Government has initiated various steps for streamlining the distribution of foodgrains and control of prices of commodities like vegetables, pluses, milk, rice, oil and other day to day use essentials, but yet there was a need to take some more to steps in this direction. He said all the shopkeepers, vendors and other business establishment have been asked to display the rate lists at their establishment. He said any violation in this regard would not be tolerated and guilty shopkeepers will be punished. He said that adulteration of food items would be viewed seriously and defaulters booked and put behind the bars.

Sharma, President Federation of Industries and Commerce, Jammu Mr. Jugal Mahajan, President Federation of Retailers Association, Jammu Yashpal Gupta, Smt. Laxmi Dutta, Advocate D.K. Khajuria, Mr. Anand Kumar Gupta, Advocate Gulam Ahmed besides senior officers of CAPD.
