RESIDENTS DEMAND CREATION OF MORE DISTRICTS IN THE STATE
7/23/2006 8:29:50 PM
Jammu, July 23 :-The Government decision to carve out eight new districts and 13 tehsils has lifted the lid from the Pandora's box following demand of people for granting district or tehsil status to their areas in Jammu and Kashmir.
Already people from Akhnoor demand district status for their tehsil. From Sangrama-Sopore belt people have started demanding district status for the areas after they were enraged over the creation of a new district with Bandipore as its headquarters.
The BJP leaders have been clamoring for creation of another five districts in the Jammu region.Besides the demand for more districts people have started asking for atleast tehsil status for a number of areas. The BJP leaders have criticised the Government for having carved out three tehsils for Srinagar district which has smaller areas and population than in Jammu district. They have demanded three additional tehsils for Jammu district.
In Kashmir people demand two more tehsils for Baramulla-Kupwara belt because of the border terrian and on account of defence strategic importance.
In addition to this, people living in various areas of the undivided districts of Jammu,Anantnag,Srinagar, and Baramulla have fears that their villages would get linked with new districts. In this context the people in Sainik colony and its adjoining areas are opposed to getting linked with Samba district.
Rameshwar Singh,an exservicemen, said that if Sainik colony gets included in Samba district we have to travel 45 kms to see settlement of our cases in the Ditsrict Magistrate's office or other Government offices when Jammu city is hardly seven kms away from our colony."
