| Industrialists oppose gypsum export | | |

The Association of Industries has alleged that some persons with vested interests in J&K Minerals Department are forcing the government to allow the scarce raw material of gypsum to be exported outside the state. In a press statement, General Secretary of the association, Kuldip Ohri said that reliable sources in the department have revealed that a powerful section of influential people are lobbying hard in government circles to allow the export of the material. Terming the proposed move of the government as uncalled for, Ohri said that the decision will put the small scale industrial sector since it uses this locally available raw material which would lead to huge losses and may even force them to close down their industrial ventures. He informed that at present around 40 cement plants and 50 Plaster of Paris (POP) units whose main raw material is gypsum on which their production is dependent. Ohri further said that there is a strong apprehension that the non-local players, under whose influence the J&K Minerals is insisting the exports, may transport millions of tons of this valuable raw material. The Association strongly condemns this proposed move of the J&K Minerals and called for immediate cancellation of any pep-talk on the issue, said General Secretary adding that government has to face serious repercussions if it went ahead in implementing the decision.
