| Hey Ram! Azad arrives in Soz’s town, via satellite | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Jan 30: Since the formation of coalition government, the factional feuds in Congress has remained a matter more interest for the observers than the functioning of government. Interestingly, the deepening of divide would get more evident on national days and anniversaries of national leaders with factions led by Pradesh Congress Committee president Prof Saifuddin Soz and Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad negatively competing against each other and offering the public another occasion to mock at.
Until now, it was a group of Ministers headed by Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, representing Ghulam Nabi Azad in absentia, going about town and countering Soz in every possible manner. Soz on the other hand would board on his side Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla and, at the most, Medical Education Minister Rajinder Singh Chib to host the ‘official function’, may it be birth or death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi or Rajiv Gandhi.
Two parallel functions, therefore, get a unique identity –both official as well as unofficial. The function presided over by Soz is known as legally official in Congress’s organizational parlance and the other hosted by Tara Chand –as symbolic representation of Ghulam Nabi Azad –would become official if seen from the government’s eyes as it is led by the Deputy Chief Minister. Therefore, the lobby leading Azad, in absentia, gets more visibility next day with elaborately written press note from state’s Information Department and, occasionally, a full page sarkari advertisement as well. Azad was never physically in town to head the parallel functions.
Hey Ram! Mahatma Gandhi’s 62nd death anniversary came up as an unprecedented event for factional fights in the terminally sick Congress camp of Jammu and Kashmir. Soz led the ‘organizationally’ official function at Shaheedi Chowk while the Azad camp organized a parallel function at Mubarak Mandi where technology was at its best to enhance this faction of Congress and belittle the Soz group. Azad arrived to boost morale of his loyalists as he popped out of a big screen to make an address, via satellite live from Delhi. Star of the occasion and biggest Gandhian of day from Azad camp was Works Minister Ghulam Mohammad Saroori as the ‘official factional representative’ Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand chose to stay away.
“Azad delivered a live address to the audience through satellite which was heard by thousands of Gandhians with pin-drop silence”, claimed the state Information Department. Azad who is the global head of Gandhian Global Family said that Gandhiji was a symbol of peace , brotherhood, mutual love and amity, his strong adherence to truth is the only way which can make the entire society as pure and worth-living. He said that principle of non-violence, socialism and secularism propagated by Gandhji during his life time are more relevant at present and only through these routes world can usher in an era of peace and tranquility.
The ‘main function’ as Congress official organization was organized by the JK PCC at its headquarters Shaheedi Chowk. Soz presided over the function which was attended by senior functionaries of PCC, DCC, frontal organizations, block presidents, representatives of different wings of the party from different parts of state, besides ministers, legislators and Corporators.
Soz chief recalled various facets of life of Mahatma Gandhi and said Gandhi Ji will remain alive not because of the reason that he is in our mind and heart but because of his ideology and philosophy which would remain relevant for all times to come. Prof. Soz said that Mahatma Gandhi practiced, in his day to day life, what he said so, will be remembered and remain alive for his principles and ideals. He (Mahatma Gandhi) gave a strongest ever weapon of non-violence, which is mightier than any other weapon.
