EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Jan 29: The University of Jammu which repeatedly boasts of being country’s first ISO certified university with international quality standards, amazingly, is way behind in maintaining the punctuality among most of its employees comprising faculty members, non-teaching staff and Class-IV.
Though the office hours of the University begin at 9:30, there is hardly any wing or teaching department on campus which could claim that its staff members occupy their chairs at the scheduled time.
To get the first hand account of the poor punctuality record of Jammu University employees, this scribe visited several teaching departments as well as other administrative wings and found to his utter surprise that around eighty percent of the employees have not reached their respective offices till 10 am and in some cases even beyond that.
Due to the ‘non-professional’ and ‘callous’ attitude of Jammu University employees, the students and visitors on campus are paying a heavy price for no fault of theirs. The students as well as other visitors face a lot of hardships in getting their works done in time as they are being welcomed mostly with empty seats, particularly between 9:30 to 10:30 am.
“Principally an employee should do his duty efficiently but unfortunately the University employees are not at all doing justice with their jobs in hand. They often come late due to which hundreds of students, some of whom come from far off places, suffer a lot.” Vikas Sharma, President National Secular Forum told Early Times. He further said, “With the employees coming late many a times we witness unruly scenes on campus. University administration should see to it that the staff members occupy their seats well in time so that undue quarrels between students and employees are avoided.” Even some of the University officials admit in hush-hush voice that late comers are in plenty in the varsity.
An official of Jammu University seeking anonymity told Early Times that timekeeping record of an average employee of this organization is far from satisfactory. Not only the high officials, the medium and lower level employees take pride in coming late to attend office.
Situation is not better either while leaving the offices as majority of them leave their work place well before 5 pm, the closing time for University. It has sort of become a habit for the employees to come late and leave early. There is no accountability; he further said adding that authorities are to be blamed for this indiscipline as they fail to check the problem effectively.
When contacted Registrar, University of Jammu, Dr PS Pathania passed the buck saying , “It is the duty of concerned branch officers, head of the teaching departments and functional heads to ensure regularity vis a vis punctuality. As far as registry is concerned, it often conducts spot checking to identify the habitual late comes.”
