| ‘Kharaashein’ staged at Drama Festival | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 1
As part of the ongoing Annual Drama Festival, Pancham Society for Art and Culture staged its play ‘Kharaashein’ at Abhinav theatre here this evening. The play was collectively directed by Gurmeet Jamwal and Vijay Kapoor. ‘Kharaashein’ is based on the poems and short stories of noted lyricist and film maker Gulzar. Its stage portrayal was conceptualised by Salim Arif. The peculiarity of the stage adaptation was that Salim did not compromise on the originality of the subject and presented it the way Gulzar could have done it. ‘Kharaashein’ as a play comments upon the pre and post partition scenario. It pointedly narrates the agony of 1947; the year when India witnessed large scale blood shed, rioting and killings. The speciality of the play lies in that though it primarily focuses on the immediate aftermath of the 1947 partition and the killings that ensued soon after, it also highlights the human face of the courageous minority which tried its best to prevent death, destruction and mayhem. ‘Kharaashein’ as a play touches human sensitivity and tries to humanise people in a subtle and simpler manner. The play crew comprised Danesh Dogra, Arya Veer Singh, Vijay Goswami, Soham, Deepik Verdhi, Poonum, and Sonia Jamwal. Set designing was taken care of by Sunita and Ashish Raina while Shabnum did costume designing. Surinder Manhas composed music for the drama. The play was part of the fortnight long Annual Drama Festival organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages. Two more plays would follow ‘Kharaashein’. After which the event would culminate. During today’s programme, Dr. Sudhir Mahajan, senior drama artist at the Cultural Academy conducted the programme proceedings. He also presented the vote of thanks.
