| US proposes UN sanctions against N Korea | | |
United Nations, Oct 10 The US has proposed sanctions against Pyongyang, including inspection of cargo to ensure no materials connected with weapons of mass destruction enter or leave North Korea, and warned that its leader will "rue the day" he took the decision to go in for nuclear tests.
Washington wants the UN Security Council to ask all states to freeze assets related to North Korea's weapons and missile programmes as well as other illicit activity it conducts and ensure that North Korea does not use their territory to make or deliver weapons of mass destruction.
US Ambassador to UN John Bolton proposed the sanctions to the Council members in response to North Korea conducting an underground nuclear test yesterday.
Among other things, the US would like to ban trade with North Korea in luxury goods and military items as also material that can used to deliver or build weapons of mass destruction.
The US proposed sanctions against North Korea, including the power to inspect all cargo entering and leaving the country and freezing assets connected with its weapons programmes. It called for inspection of all cargo to and from North Korea to limit proliferation.
The proposals from Council members are being examined by an experts committee and it is yet unclear when the Council will be ready to consider a resolution and how tough will sanctions be in view of China insisting that door for a negotiated solution should be kept open.
Diplomats said the Council has limited choice as it had already banned trading with North Korea in materials and technology for missiles and weapons of mass destruction after it test-fired several missiles in July.
