| Forest Policy soon for J&K: Altaf | | | Early Times Report Jammu, February 1: Minister for Forests, Mian Altaf Ahmad has said that the Government was contemplating a comprehensive forest policy to ensure preservation of State’s green gold, besides checking deforestation and environmental degradation. The Minister was addressing a public gathering at Jindera Dansal, about 35 km from here. Mian Altaf said that the forest degradation has posed great challenges to the State, adding that need for framing a comprehensive and effective forest policy has been felt to check deforestation and environmental problems. The Minister said a forest conference would be convened at Jammu and Srinagar to seek public opinion, particularly from environmentalists and people living near forests. He said the Government has already instructed concerned officers to tighten the nose on smugglers and ensure the safety of the forests. He said a large number of smugglers have been arrested and punished under law, adding no leniency would be given in this regard. Responding to the local demands about job opportunities in Government Departments to Gujjar community and development share, Mian Altaf said that the community should gets its due share in employment under ST category as it was their right. He said that he would personally monitor the Gujjar community in Gujjar community was not deprived of its due share of employment opportunity. He said the Gujjar also deserved a better deal and favoured their reservation as Scheduled Tribe, so that they benefit from various schemes. Later, the Minister visited the grave of a renowned Gujjar religious saint late Aalam-ud-Din on his death anniversary. Among other, Choudhary Zaffar also accompanied the Minister.
