| Mir for opening Ranbir Canal in March | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, FEBRUARY 01 – Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Ghulam Hassan Mir has urged upon the officers and engineers of Irrigation and Flood Control and Agriculture Departments for making best use of available water resources and timely storage of water for irrigation purposes so that the farmers are not put to any problem while irrigating their lands. The Minister was addressing a meeting of officers, here today, held to review the measures being taken to overcome the shortage of irrigation water due to dry spell. The Minister directed for construction of Check Dams/ Water Harvesting Tanks under NREGA to ensure storage of water for irrigation purpose for the affected areas and the areas where need will arise. In this connection, the Minister asked for holding a joint meeting of Secretary Rural development, Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control, Jammu and Director Agriculture and Production, Jammu to discuss effective measures for overcoming the scarcity of water in affected areas. . Regarding closure of Ranbir Canal, the Minister enjoined upon the concerned agencies to minimize the closure time of the canal and start repair and other works on the canal in double shifts. He stressed the concerned to ensure that the canal was opened in the middle of March instead of 13th of April so that the irrigation facilities are provided well in time, saving the crops from any damage.
