| J&K libraries to go online | | | Early Times Report Jammu, February 02- Public libraries in Jammu & Kashmir are in for a major revamp in conformity with modern requirements. The library information would be computerized and made available online for readers across the globe. Two libraries exclusively for women would also be set up in the twin capitals of Srinagar and Jammu to promote reading habits among the fair sex even as the Department of Libraries would also be reorganized to bring in qualified and professional personnel. The Minister for Tourism & Culture, Mr. Nawang Rigzin Jora held a meeting to review the working of the Department of Libraries & Research here today. Commissioner/Secretary to Government, Finance, Mr. Sudhanshu Pandey, Secretary, Tourism & Culture, Ms. Tanveer Jehan, Director Libraries & Research, Mr. Khalid Bashir Ahmad, Director General Achieves, Archaeology and Museum, Syed Khurshid Ahmad Qadri and senior officers of J&K PCC Ltd and J&K Housing Board were present. Mr. Jora called for a complete vision to define the role and set up of public libraries that he described as storehouses of knowledge. He said there was urgent need to consolidate and upgrade the library facilities in the State so that people in large numbers are drawn to reading books which trait was on decline. He said books on varied and contemporary subjects should be made available to visitors. Mr. Jora emphasized the importance of computerization of public libraries and approved the proposal for inviting expression of interest to ensure completion of the job in a timeframe. The Minister asked for a proposal for reorganization of the Department of Libraries and revision of Recruitment and Library and Reading Room Rules to improve working of the Department. He also issued instructions to speed up filling of vacant posts by referring these to the recruiting agencies. With regard to the problem of books outstanding with borrowers for a long time, he said details should be compiled and measures taken to recover this valuable asset. The construction programme of the Department was also discussed in detail and the Minister stressed on the executing agencies the need to speed up completion of the under construction projects. He said he would pursue with the Government to provide onetime allocation of the project cost of the prestigious SPS Central Library building under construction at M. A. Road Srinagar. The estimated cost of the project is Rs. 17.34 crores. Once completed, the 7 storey Library complex will also have an Art Gallery, auditorium, fire-proof blocks for manuscripts, Internet café, Exhibition Hall, Children Section, Researchers’ cabins and cafeteria. The newly constructed Gani Memorial Reading Centre at Rajouri Kadal named after the famous Persian poet of Kashmir, Gani Kashmiri, and District Library Pulwama building would be handed over by the executing agencies within 15 days. Earlier, the Secretary Tourism & Culture and Director Libraries & Research gave a briefing about the working, organizational set up and problems of the department.
