Police cops here are merely mute specttaors
10/10/2006 7:23:54 PM

Jammu, October 10:- The absence of effective policing in Jammu during the current festival season continues to haunt peace loving people. And the incident of hooliganism in the busy Gole market area of Gandhi Nagar, behind the Swaran theatre,on Monday evening has sent shock waves among people, especially women, who had assembled in a large number to get henna applied to their palms on the occasion of Karva Chauth.
As people were busy in shopping a group of teenagers started manhandling another group aboard a car. They smashed the window panes of car and numbers of the passengers were seen profusely bleeding. Even though they managed to escape in their car the attackers chased them on their motorcycles. All it happened in the presence of a posse of police officials standing hardly a few metres away from the scene of the incident. It led to the traffic jam and cars and scooters blocked the three lanes in the Gole market. Women did not allow their husbands to move out of either the shops, where they were shopping, or from the cars which had been sandwiched in the traffic jams because of scare.
After the din subsided two cops, wielding lathis, appeared on the scene beating the metal road. After making the customary inquiry from a wayside fruit vendor the cops disappeared never to be seen again. Even a group of traffic policemen who were managing the traffic near the famous super market did not bother to intervene when the hooligans indulged in unsavoury activities.
The police preferred to lie low even when the attackers were asking their accomplices to get “samaam”(weapons) and had they managed it would have proved a bloody evening in Gandhi Nagar.
