| Shopian protests CM’s arrival | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 4: Barring a few officials, nobody was present to receive the Chief Minister at Shopian today where he had to attend the district board meeting. The town wore a deserted look in response to a call by Majlis-e-Mushawarat. The Majlis, that seeks justice for the relatives of Aasiya and Neelofar who were raped and murdered on May 29 last year, had called for strike to protest Chief Minister’s failure to bring the culprits to justice. All shops and commercial establishments were closed. Traffic was off the roads. Attendance in offices including banks was very thin as most of the people preferred to stay indoors in response to the Majlis call. The Chief Minister promised RS 50 lakhs for a college and irrigation canal. He also issued ordered for release of Rs 5 lakh for a library. However, the meeting drew flak as two PDP members, Mahbooba Mufti representing Wachi Constituency and Abdul Rashid Zavoora who represents Shopian constituency abstained from the meeting. Mahbooba giving reasons for her absence later said she could not sit with the killers.
