| Govt rebuts CRPF claims | | | New Delhi, Feb 4: For the second time in a month, CRPF's Special Director General N K Tripathi has rankled the Jammu and Kashmir Government which has lodged a strong protest over his remarks that terrorists were making fresh attempts to target the popular Vaishno Devi shrine. The state government claimed on Thursday (February 4) there was no fresh input to suggest a potential terror attack. Such statements from senior police officials created unnecessary panic resulting in fall in flow of pilgrims and thus affecting tourism, high-placed sources in the state government said. Tripathi, a 1974 batch IPS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre, claimed at a news conference in Jammu yesterday that there were fresh inputs suggesting that terrorist groups were attempting to target the hill-top shrine, about 60 kms from Jammu. The officer's threat perception was rejected by the state government which lodged a protest with the Centre. The sources said while the security of the shrine was accorded high importance by the state government, there were neither any fresh technical nor human intelligence inputs suggesting a possible attack in and around the shrine area. They said security reviews of important places and installation was always constantly reviewed on a fortnightly basis. Last month, the Special DG, who has been on a central deputation for the first time in his career, had put the paramilitary forces in an awkward situation by making a request to the state police to protect CRPF officers posted in the valley. However, he retracted later.
