| Yet another Srinagar student falls to bullets | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 5: The Chief Minister has ordered an enquiry into the killing of an 11th standard student by the CRPF at Nishat today. The enquiry has been entrusted to Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Naseema Lankar. Taking strong note of the incident, the Chief Minister, who flew to New Delhi this afternoon, ordered an enquiry to be completed within a week. The killing also evoked immediate response from the Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda convened a meeting of senior police officers to discuss the development. The civil administration also held an emergency meeting to deal with the situation emerging out of the killing. According to reports, a youth identified as Zahid Farooq was shot at by CRPF personnel at brain, Nishat when he was playing cricket with his friends. The injured Zahid was rushed to SMHS hospital where he succumbed around 4 p.m. Massive demonstrations broke out when Zahid’s body reached Nishat. The people pelted stones on the police and the CRPF. The CRPF responded by tear smoke shells and also fired several rounds in air to disperse the protestors. The protestors raised slogans against the police and CRPF. They also chanted anti-India slogans. Late in the evening, the protestors marched with body of Zahid on the Boulevard. They had plans to march up to Chief Minister’s residence. However, the police intercepted them near Passport office and subjected them to severe shelling. The protesters demanded an explanation from the Chief Minister. The SHO Nishat while talking to media persons said: “Right now we do not know about the identity of the CRPF man who fired at Zahid. A case has been registered and investigations are on. The identity of the accused shall be ascertained in due course of time”, he said. Meanwhile, the authorities clamped undeclared curfew in down town and some localities of uptown Srinagar today as a `precautionary measure’ as rest of the Valley observed total strike for the fifth consecutive day today. People in besieged areas could not offer Friday prayers as curfew and prohibitory orders under Section144 were strictly enforced. The police had erected barricades on all important roads. However, the people offered prayers in a Maisuma mosque.
