JAMMU, FEBRUARY 6 – The Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, has stressed the need for collection, preservation and propagation of folklore and literature to effectively showcase the centuries old glorious pluralistic ethos of the people of the State.
The Governor was addressing the inaugural session of the 3-day National Seminar on Folk Literature of Kashmiri Language at Kala Kendra, here this evening. The seminar has been organized by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi.
The Governor said that Kashmir has remained a seat of learning and knowledge, religious and philosophical discourses since centuries, adding that it would be most productive to undertake focused inter-disciplinary research on literature, history and culture of Kashmir to preserve it for the future generations. He said that though the Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and Languages, besides other research organizations, has made commendable initiatives in this direction but sustained and planned endeavours are required to preserve this literary treasure trove. He added that folk literature emanates straight from the hearts and minds of people.
Referring to the writings of notable travelers who visited Kashmir, the Governor observed that all these provide a deep insight into the lifestyle, value system, culture and traditions of the people of the State. Describing folk literature as the bedrock of any civilization, he spoke about communal harmony, secular ethos and high pluralistic traditions of Jammu and Kashmir deeply embedded into the value system of people. Observing that the State has the distinction of having a rich cultural diversity in all the three regions, he emphasized that this beautiful confluence of pluralistic cultural ethos has to be further nurtured and enriched.
Appreciating the initiative taken by the Sahitya Akademi to organize this national level seminar, the Governor urged the Akademi to publish a book based on the research papers being presented by different scholars on various dimensions of folklore, which would serve as a useful document for future discussions.
Wishing the seminar high success and the participants’ profitable discussions, the Governor hoped that the event would have an interesting outcome.
Dr. Farooq Fayaz in his keynote address dwelt on the growth of folk literature in Kashmiri language, which he described as an important source of history. While throwing light on various forms of folk literature, he enumerated the initiatives being taken by various scholars to study this literature.
The famous writer, Prof. Margoob Banihali, put forth several suggestions for promotion of Kashmiri language and literature. He suggested that the Radio and Doordarshan should allot more timeslots for this language.
