| Sham declares open Red Cross Mela | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, FEBRUARY 06 – Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma today declared open a 2-day Red Cross Mela at Kala Kendra amidst great fun-fare. The Mela has been organized by the State unit of Red Cross in collaboration with various organizations including CRPF, Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Arts, Culture and Languages and Government College for Women, Parade. Soon after inaugurating the Mela, he visited various stalls and interacted with stall holders and students who manned these. He showed keen interest in the products exhibited at the stalls. On the occasion, Artists of Cultural Academy also presented a colorful bonanza of folk dances and traditional songs which was highly applauded by the audiences. Lauding the role of the organization, the Minister said that Red Cross is doing yeoman’s service for the society. He said that Organization is always in the fore-front at the times of natural calamities, emergencies and rendering the valuable services for the poor and needy. He appealed the people to donate generously and make this organization stronger to meet any eventuality. He appreciated the hard work of Mr. Anil Padha, Mr. Feroz Ahmed and their team who have made a valuable contribution for the poor sections of the society during recent years. He assured them all necessary assistance from the Government. He urged the Red Cross Society to create a massive awareness among the people about its aims and objectives so that more and more volunteers join the organization. He also called for steps to bring social reforms especially to eradicate social evils, corruption, dreaded diseases like AIDS and helping the youth to keep away them from drug-addiction which is spreading in the society like wild-fire, the Minister added. Various NGOs and Government departments have displayed their stalls in the Mela. Health department has also set up a medical camp in the Mela. The general public, especially students, visiting the stall showed their interest in knowing about the Air Force in the times of war and peace. The stall named "Touch the Sky with Glory" provides detailed information to the visitors about the Indian Air Force. The information about the career opportunities in the Air Force is also being provided to the visitors. The stall also provides visual appraisal of the Indian Air Force, the 4th largest Air Force in the world. Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Director Health Services, Jammu, Dr. Jasbir Singh, Additional Secretary, J&K Academy of Arts, Culture & Languages, Ms. Sabita Bakshi, Regional Secretary, Red Cross Society, Mr. Anil Padha, State Secretary, Red Cross Society, Mr. Feroz Ahmed, various NGOs, doctors and intellectuals and functionaries of Red Cross Society were present on the occasion. The objective of holding the Mela is to highlight the functioning and achievements of the Red Cross and to attract more and more people to join the Organization to further broad base its activities. The income generated from the event would go to the Red Cross for helping the needy.
