| Indian Navy to build a Paediatric ward in valley | | | New Delhi | October 10
The Indian Navy is constructing a 15-bed Paediatric Ward as an annex to the existing District Hospital at Handwara town, in Jammu and Kashmir.
The ward is being built in memory of the children who lost their lives in Wular Lake on May 30, 2006 when a naval boat carrying them for a picnic got capsized. Twenty children and two members of staff of the Burning Candle School lost their lives for whom an interim relief of Rupees one lakh each to the families of the deceased was provided by the navy.
The foundation stone for the ward would be laid by the Chief of Naval staff, Admiral Arun Prakash, on October 15, 2006.
The naval boat belonged to the 'Prahar' wing of the Indian Navy's marine commandos active in the Wular Lake. The 'Prahar' commandos carry out specialised operations in the valley.
The decision to build the ward which will be functional by mid-2007 was taken after consultations with state authorities, prominent citizens of Handwara and the parents of the deceased children.
The project is being overlooked by Captain D.S.Sodhi, a naval officer from the submarine arm, in coordination with the army. |
