Enquiry into teenager's death 'eyewash': PDP
2/7/2010 10:53:24 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 7: PDP today termed as an "eyewash", the enquiry into the killing of a teenager allegedly by security forces and said government was raising the issue of 'resurgent militancy' to hide its failures and crush dissent.
"The recent tragic events have established beyond doubt that the government has returned to the age-old tactics of using fear as a ploy for its political survival," PDP senior leader Tariq Hameed Karra said in a statement here.
Referring to the death of Zahid Farooq (16), he said letting loose paramilitary troops in Srinagar was part of the same politically motivated strategy of the government.
He said having failed to deliver on the governance front, the government has now started raising the issue of resurgent militancy to hide its failures and crush dissent.
Shah (16) was shot dead on Friday at Brain-Nishat, near Jammu. The killing had sparked instant protests with angry locals alleging that the teenager was killed by securitymen travelling in a vehicle without any provocation.
Karra, a former minister, alleged that the valley was witnessing brutalities as in the days of eruption of militancy with wanton killings, curfews, arrests, thrashing of men and women, crackdowns, searches, humiliating frisking and hinghandedness of security forces.
Accusing the state administration of callousness, Karra said instead of addressing the concerns of the public, the government was behaving like an "extension" of the security establishment by hounding hapless citizens.
People in most parts of the city were not even allowed to move out of their houses to administer polio drops to their children, he alleged.
