| Re-schedule Census dates: JK Gujjars to RGI | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 7 : Gujjars and Bakerwals of the state have appealed to the Registrar General of India (RGI) to re-schedule the dates of Census-2011 in Jammu and Kashmir. The migratory tribes have suggested beginning of census process in the state only after October 2010 to ensure correct enumeration of nomadic population who would be under seasonal migration during the period of house listing which will be completed during summer months between May to August 2010. Addressing a meeting of the community members here today, Dr Javaid Rahi, Secretary Tribal Research and Cultural Foundation- an organization working for tribal society, said that we have sent a memorandum addressed to RGI, urging strongly to make it possible for nomadic communities of Jammu and Kashmir to participate in this census to be held after a gap of ten years. In 2000, they did not enumerate us, said Rahi adding that around 3 Lakh nomadic Gujjars who were on upper reaches at that point of time, in connection with annual migration, had not been enumerated and reflected in the census report 2001. As per official notification issued by RGI, the first phase of Census 2011 would formally commence from May 15 to June 30 in accessible areas and from July 16 to August 30 2010 in other areas of the state. The Census department is all set for the exercise which is aimed at providing latest population figures and comprehensive picture of social and living conditions of the people of the State. Last time the exercise was held in 2000. In memorandum, it has been further appealed to RGI to conduct a separate survey before census 2011 mapping the movement of nomads in Himalayan region of J&K and provide fresh registration by introducing "Nomadic Category" in census in order to accommodate a big chunk of tribal population in this process. It was also urged that Gujjar and Bakerwal employees of the state are to be associated with census operations so that their correct enumeration could be recorded and members of State Advisory Board for Gujjars and Bakerwals and Tribal Advisory groups of districts should be involved and associated with this process.
