Jammu, Feb 7: Barely few days after opposed the idea of dialogue with Pakistan till perpetrators of 26/11 were punished, the National Conference patriarch and Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Dr Farooq Abdullah today expected a summit level talks between Prime Ministers of both countries after Foreign Secretaries and Foreign Ministers met.
Abdullah senior was talking to the reporters at RS Pura, near here, after launching party’s membership drive in Jammu region. The membership drive for Kashmir had been launched on December 15, 2009.
Farooq hope that forthcoming round of talks between foreign secretaries of both India and Pakistan would pave the way for the next round of talks between the foreign ministers and later Prime Minister level talks.
He also said both the centre and the state government should ensure that people responsible for the killing on innocent youth in Kashmir valley should be given punishment and penalised to send across a strong message.
Those responsible for the killing of youth in Kashmir valley should be given severe punishment, he said.
Maintaining that he had recommended the name of Gulam Mohmmad Mir for the Padma award because of his contribution to counter insurgency in the state, Dr Abdullah on Sunday said it was the Centre that decided to honour him. "I did recommend him (Mir) for the Padma award. I have recommended various other names. But it is the committee at the Home Ministry that has decided it," he said.
Praising Mir's role in countering insurgency in the state, Abdullah said his contribution could not be ignored.
Asked why former Chief Minister and his father Sheikh Abdullah was not given such an award, he said, "Please keep Gandhi Ji and Sheikh Sahib out of it. They worked for the nation and not for the awards."
Terming the recent death of a boy in alleged action by the security forces in Srinagar as unfortunate, he recommended strong action against those involved in the incident.
"Omar (Chief Minister, Jammu and Kashmir) has taken up the issue with Home Ministry for central help in the case", he said.
To a question on increasing incidents of stone-pelting in Srinagar, he said it is being funded to disturb peace and tranquility in Kashmir.
