| Water logging in Krishna Nagar: Solution elusive | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 8
Incessant rains that had been occurring since Saturday night turned into a nightmare for residents and commuters at Krishna Nagar today morning as one-kilometer road stretch between Jewel Chowk and Canal junction submerged in knee-deep water, leaving many stranded on roadside. Residents and shopkeepers had tough time removing water from their houses and shops as the drains were choked while floated garbage on the road was particularly harsh on office-goers and students who took alternative routes to reach their destinations. The students of GGM Science College and SPMR College for Commerce bore the brunt of “utter negligence” and “callousness” on the part of municipal corporation authorities as they found it difficult to cross over the road. Even accumulated water entered both the colleges which also put the faculty members of the colleges into several hardships. Interestingly, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) continued to make tall claims that appropriate arrangements have been made to tackle the problem of water logging in low lying areas of the city. Instead of owing the responsibility of “total chaos and mess” on this stretch, the civic body shifted blame on Urban Environment and Engineering Department (UEED), saying that ‘Nullah’ flowing through Krishna Nagar has not been designed as per the plan. “Though it had not been raining heavily since Saturday night, yet water entered our shops and houses. Whenever it rains, situation becomes problematic for us,” Gourav Mahajan, a shopkeeper outside GGM Science College said. As a part of damage control exercise, authorities in civic body engaged few Safai Karamcharis to clear the garbage floating on the road. After two hours exhaustive drive, the road was cleared for movement of pedestrians and commuters. Talking to the Early Times, Satish Kumar, Chairman Public Health and Sanitation Committee, said that the ‘Nullah’ has not been designed as per the plan. “There are some technical problems that led to overflow of garbage from choked drains. As we deal with the sanitation of the city, the maintenance of ‘Nullahs’ flowing through the city does not come under the purview of our wing,” he said. He further said that footpaths have been encroached by shopkeepers which have been creating problems for clearance of garbage. Besides, narrowness of exit point of Nullah flowing through Krishna Nagar is also one of the causes of existing problem.
