CM releases Shamsbari at prestigious function at SKICC
Scattering, division & backwardness of Paharis is result of 1947 turmoil: Azad

Srinagar, October 10 –“Synergy of human expression through rich medium of multi-languages helps in developing ideal atmosphere of intellect and usher the society towards proud civilization”, said Chief Minister Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad on the occasion of release of special number of Shamsbari, a Pahari literary magazine, at an impressive and jam-packed function organized by J&K Pahari Welfare Society headed by Mr. Zaffar Iqbal Manhas at SKICC here today.
Chief Minister said that Pahari language has its own historical background and it is the time to realize that the turmoil period of 1947 mostly affected the hilly people of Jammu and Kashmir State.
Mr. Azad said history is witness of bravery and valour of Pahari people who resisted all kinds of onslaughts with full courage. He said in-spite of the fact that Paharis lack all such facilities which are available in plains, the fertile and rich literature emerged from hilly regions of the state. He said that all great people and religious and spiritual personalities have loved mountains as these have become instruments for purification of souls and spirits.
Chief Minister said that Jammu and Kashmir legislature during Dr. Farooq Abdullah’s Chief Ministership and during the present coalition government has unanimously passed resolutions for granting Scheduled Tribe status to Paharis and he has himself pleaded that keeping in view sufferings of Pahari people as result of 1947, these people deserve to have ST status.
Chief Minister besides releasing Shamsbari also released two other books on the occasion. These are Oos Paar by Mr. Raja Shujaat and Birtiyan by Mr. K. D. Maini.
Among those who also spoke on the occasion included ex-Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Muzaffar Hussain Baig, Mr. M. Y. Tarigami MLA, ex-Minister Mr. Mohammad Shafi Uri, Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Prof. Abdul Wahid Qureshi, Mr. Nazir Ahmad Masoodi and Mr. Zaffar Iqbal Manhas.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Muzaffar Hussain Baig said that Paharis have all along been brave, courageous and hardworking people. He strongly pleaded for according ST status to Pahari speaking people, adding that it is imperative for their speedy and over all socio-economic development. He also dwelt on the efforts made by many stalwarts of Pahari language for its promotion.
Mr. M. Y. Tarigami said that Pahari language has born and nurtured in mountains, adding that art, culture and literature are product of various facets of life and reflect value system of the society. He said Pahari language has a special distinction as it is spoken and understood all over the state and as such all possible measures should be taken for its development and promotion. He also pleaded for according ST status to Pahari speaking people.
Vice Chancellor Kashmir University Prof. Abdul Wahid Qureshi said that Shamsbari has a large readership even abroad and felicitated Mr. Zaffar Iqbal Manhas for bringing out an excellent and thought provoking special number of the magazine. He said Jammu and Kashmir has the unique distinction and shining example of glorious composite cultural heritage and the time has come to make sustained efforts to preserve and promote this glorious heritage of the sate.
Mr. Mohammad Shafi Uri dwelt in detail on the chronology of development and promotion of Pahari language. He also appreciated the role of several personalities in this effort and stressed for giving ST status to Pahari speaking people.
Mr. Nazir Ahmad Masoodi said that language is the true mirror of any culture and added that such largely attended functions with participation of intellectuals, writers, academicians and senior political leaders will go a long way in promotion of Pahari language. He also urged for addressing the long pending demand of granting ST status to the Pahari speaking people.
Mr. Zaffar Iqbal Manhas threw light on the activities of J&K Pahari Welfare Society and the contribution of Shamsbari in promotion of Pahari language. He also pleaded for according ST status to Pahari speaking people.
Secretary Academy of Art, Culture and Languages Dr. Rafiq Masoodi and Director Information Khawaja Farooq Renzu were also present on the occasion.
Intellectuals, writers, academicians, senior officers, prominent citizens and a large number of Paharis from various parts of the state were present on the occasion.
