33 killed, 200 injured since January
9 civilians, 7 troopers among dead

Srinagar, Feb 8: Thirty-three persons have got killed since January 1till date. The deceased include 17 militants, 9 civilians and 7 troopers. Around 200 civilians and security personnel sustained injuries during the said period.
The militants fired at a BSF patrol at Soura on January 2. Two BSF men sustained injuries in the shoot out. Same day police allegedly killed a civilian, Abdul Rashid Waniat Kandi Baramulla. However, the police said the civilian died in an accident.
A police man, Mahesh Lal died in an IED explosion in high security zone JIC Baramulla on January 5.
Fidayeen appeared in heart of Srinagar, Lal Chowk on January 6and entered Punjab Hotel. The gun battle lasted two days and left a police man, a civilian and two militants dead. Two journalists also sustained injuries.
A fierce encounter between militants and troops left 22 persons injured at Pampore. ON January 9, the police shot dead a student when he was on his way to tuition classes. Identified as Inayat Ullah Khan of Dalgate, the killing evoked widespread protests in Srinagar. Same day unidentified gunmen shot dead a civilian identified as Gulzar Ahmad Kaimo, Kulgam. Earlier same day a gunmen whose identity could not be ascertained shot dead a former militant.
A gun battle left two militants including a divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahideen dead at Thanola, Reasi. The slain commander was identified as Irfan. The encounter also left a trooper wounded.
A militant got killed in an encounter with the troops at Pulwama on January 12. The deceased was identified as Riyaz Ahmad Vaid. Same day a former militant, Latif Ahmad Malik was shot dead at Kalaroos, Kupwara by unidentified gunmen.
Hizbul Mujahideen Divisional Commander, Muhammad Sharief Chapoo of Shamaswari, Rajouri was killed on January 14 at Tangmarg.
A police man and a civilian were killed at Sopore on January 15 when militants hurled a grenade at police station, Sopore and later fired a police party. The incident left six police men and a political activist injured.
One person, Manzoor Ahmad Sofi got killed on January 17 at Pattan when CRPF men opened fire. The killing triggered massive demonstrations in the area.
A militant owing allegiance to Jaish-e-Muhammad and hailing from Pakistan administered Kashmir got killed in a gun battle at Poonch on January 18.
On January 19 a powerful IED ripped apart a police vehicle causing injuries to a DSP and six police men at Tral. The SHO Tral was among the injured.
On January 24, the police used a civilian as a human shield during an encounter with the militants. The civilian got killed. However, the police said the death was caused in an exchange of fire between the police and the troops. Massive demonstrations followed the killing. The deceased was identified as Mushtaq Ahmad.
A severe gun fight at Kishtwar on January 24 left two troopers dead.
On January 31, the police fired a tear smoke shell at a student, Wamiq Farooq at Rajouri Kadal killing him on the spot. The killing triggered massive protests. The authorities responded by clamping undeclared curfew in the city and elsewhere in the Valley. The demonstrations left more than 175 persons including 25 police men injured. In fact, the Valley is yet to come out of the hangover.
On February 4 a fierce encounter at Poonch left three militants and an army trooper dead. On February 5 a Pakistani intruder was shot dead in Samba sector, Jammu. Same day unidentified killers fired at a student at Nishat. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed. The deceased has been identified as Zahid Farooq. The government has ordered an enquiry into the killing.
