| BJP protests sky rocketing prices of essentials | | | Early Times Report Jammu , Feb 9: Rajesh Gupta BJP district president took out massive rally to protest against the sky-rocketing prices. Rally started from Dogra Chowk and passed through Vinayak Bazar, Indira Chowk, Hari Market, Raghunath Bazar and City Chowk and culminated at Purani Mandi Chowk. Activists were carrying placards against the failure of the Congress-led UPA to contain the price rise. State President Shamsher Singh Manhas while addressing protestors said that high prices of essential commodities have broken backbone of common man. Both state as well as central government is least concerned of survival of common citizen. He criticized the state government for imposing 4 per cent VAT on Puja items and stationary items while it has not been imposed any where in the country. Ridiculing government for imposing one per cent Composite Tax, as it is 0.25 per cent in neighboring states. He questioned the state government as to why it has exempted Toll Tax on export of fruits from Valley. He said the government should exempt Toll Tax on the incoming items, which can be available to the consumers at some cheap rates. He demanded that the Super Bazar should be run by the government itself, instead of giving to private parties; besides make available essential items at subsidized rates to the consumers. Leader of Legislators Party Prof Chaman Lal Gupta, while comparing the price index with the BJP-led NDA under Atal Behari Vajpayee, said that the country faced a number of natural calamities, besides international sanctions and Kargil war; still there was no price rise because the NDA was committed for common citizen. Former State President & Jammu East MLA Ashok Khajuria said that the people of the state, Jammu region in particular, who voted in favour of the Congress during the last Assembly and Parliament elections are feeling betrayed as both the governments have not formulated any policy to provide respite from the sky rocketing of prices. District President Rajesh Gupta said that situation in the state is very different where the employees are not paid regular salaries, those engaged under various Rehbar schemes are paid even less than what a labourer earns in a month. In such a situation, a common man is finding it very difficult to manage even 2-time meal for the family. He asked the Congress ministers and MLAs hailing from Jammu as to why they are not coming out openly against the failure of the Kashmir-centric coalition government in ensuring regular and adequate supply of ration items in the depots. He declared that in the coming days, the BJP activists will further intensify agitation on the issue of price rise and urged the people to not get misled by the hollow slogans of the Congress-led UPA and the NC-Congress coalition.
