| Avalanche hits Massu in Kishtwar | | 24 SFC labourers rescued, 19 untraced | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 9: Of the 43 labourers of the state forest corporation (SFC), who were trapped in an avalanche amid heavy snowfall in the far-flung Massu Paddar area of Kishtwar today, 24 were rescued, while there was no trace of the 19 others. Official sources said 43 labourers were engaged by SFC for the collection and transportation of timber at Massu Paddar. While they were doing their work in the morning, it started snowing heavily, the sources added.Sources said before they could move to safety, an avalanche occured as a result of which all of them were trapped. However, when cops at the Atholi police station, 14 km from Massu Paddar, came to know about it, they rushed to the spot. Sources said after trekking the treacherous passes, the cops reached the spot in the afternoon and rescued 24 of the trapped labourers with the help of local people. There was no trace of the remaining 19 labourers till late in the evening when the rescue operation was stopped, the sources added. Sources, however, ruled out the possibility of their having been washed away by the avalanche. They must have moved to the nearby Massu village, the sources added. Sources said cops would make searches for them Wednesday. Massu Paddar experienced over 4 ft snow today, while the nearby Machail and Ishtiari saw over 6 ft snow, the sources added. It is pertinent to mention here that four people were killed in an avalanche in Machail area of Kishtwar last month.
