| Open Choice row | | Students gherao VC office | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 10
After the ambiguity it displayed for the proposed police post on Jammu University campus, the authorities in the varsity, it seems, are virtually finding themselves in another precarious situation over the issue of granting concession in different three year degree courses in the ensuing annual examinations. The ongoing agitation, which entered sixth day, seeking curtailment in syllabus due to the wastage of time during the current academic session took a new turn when thousands of students from different government degree colleges in the city today gheraoed the office chambers of the Vice Chancellor, Jammu University, Prof Varun Sahni. Hundreds of female students accompanied by their male counterparts marched from their respective colleges towards University of Jammu to mount pressure on authorities to concede their demands. Students of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar staged a protest march from their college premises towards the Jammu University (JU) campus. They were led by the representatives of Jammu Joint Students’ Federation (JJSF). Later, they were joined by the students of Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College and Government Maulana Azad Memorial (MAM) Post Graduate College en route. “According to UGC norms an academic calendar of degree level courses must contain 180 lectures but during the current session not half of the lectures have been conducted. The JU authorities should solve the genuine problems of students by giving them concession in syllabus,” said JJSF Vice President Pratap Singh. Controller of Examinations, University of Jammu, R D Sharma and Dean Students Welfare, J S Tara assured the protesting students that necessary measures would be taken to resolve the issues. After the assurance of the officials the students lifted their dharna. R D Sharma said, “We would constitute a panel to look into the demands of the students. The annual examinations would be held as per schedule and the final decision with regard to concession in syllabus would be taken by the higher authorities.” Official sources, however, told Early Times that the dates for the final exams have not yet been fixed as the consent of all the college principals is necessitated for that but till date they have not sent their approval for finalizing the schedule. Meanwhile, normal class work in all the colleges got disrupted for sixth consecutive day today with students including girls stayed away from their classes and took out protest rallies demanding curtailment in syllabus for different three years degree courses in forthcoming annual exams.
