| Police Khatam Shareef for peace goes in vain | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 10: Never had such esteemed guests arrived in the Police Control Room. Every body was on his toes. The room meant for the guests was properly cleaned. Perfumed smoke emanating from the incense sticks and the spray of rose water at regular intervals had a soothing effect on the guests and the hosts as well. It was an ideal environment for a prayer meeting meant for peace and tranquility in the conflict ridden state. But the feast went in vain. The assembly did not yield the desired results. Much to the discomfort of the embarrassed police officials, the Control Room fiasco evoked humorous reaction outside. On January 30, a grand feast was hosted in the Police Control Room for thirty-three Mullas from different shrines of the city. As per established precedents, the guests started the prayer meeting by reciting Quranic verses followed by Naa’t andDarood-o-Azkaar. For several hours they prayed for a peaceful 2010. Some police men also participated in the prayer meeting. Delicious wazwaan was served at the end and the Mullas, reports said, were given some Nazrana (money) for praying peace. The esteemed guests had a hearty meal. They also took delicious wazwaan for their families. The prayer meeting was well conducted but something went wrong somewhere. Allah the almighty chose not to grant the prayer. Peace became a casualty next day and to add insult to injury stone pelting youth did not spare the Control Room building where the Mullahs had held a Khatam Shareef (prayer meeting) previous day. A day after the police hosted the feast, a youth Wamiq Farooq was killed by a police official in down town Srinagar. The killing evoked severe reaction across Kashmir. At least 150 persons including 50 police and CRPF men sustained injuries in violent clashes that crippled life for five days in Srinagar and other major towns of the Valley. As things started settling down by February 5, another youth, Zahid Farooq got killed in mysterious circumstances at Brain Nishat. The locals blame a security agency for the killing. The authorities had to impose undeclared curfew to ensure peace. How can prayer meetings help a secular police force? A Mullah, who was ignored for unknown reasons, questioned.
