| NH traffic remains suspended | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 10: Traffic on the 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway remained suspended for the fifth day today because of avalanche threat though landslides and snow had been cleared from the road. Meanwhile, several dozen villages, far flung and remote areas, particularly near the Line of Control (LoC) remained cut off from the rest of the state due to heavy snowfall. Landslides and shooting stones, triggered by heavy rains at Penthal have been cleared by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, a traffic police spokesman said here this afternoon. He said the snow which was accumulated on the highway between Jawahar tunnel and Banihal had also been removed by the BRO. However, due to threat of avalanches, no traffic was allowed, he said. As there was improvement in the weather though the minimum temperature was several degree below normal, there was possibility of snow avalanche and mudslides on the highway. The road was also slippery between tunnel and Banihal in the morning when the temperature was between minus 2.6 degree to minus 4 degree. Official sources said a group of security force personnel, guarding the tunnel had a narrow escape when a snow avalanche occured near the tunnel. A tower of a mobile phone company was also damaged due to snow avalanche, they said. Thousands of passengers and truckers remained stranded at different places on the highway for the fifth day today, he added. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed the administration to provide all assistance to the stranded passengers. He has reportedly directed them to prepare a list of stranded passengers, who were demanding that they should be airlifted to Srinagar and Jammu. Due to heavy to very heavy snowfall, several dozen villages and other far flung and remote areas in Kupwara, Baramulla and Bandipora remained cut off from the rest of the state. Both Sadhna and Razdan passes also remained closed due to eight to ten feet of snowfall, disconnecting all villages in Keran, Karnah, Machili and Tangdhar from the district headquarters.
