| Rehabilitation of youth who crossed LoC, sincere effort of Omar: Nasir, Javed | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, Feb 12
Ministers of State Nasir Aslam Wani and Javed Ahmad Dar made it clear that the rehabilitation policy announced by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and endorsed by the Central Government will prove beneficial for youth who crossed LoC during the years of turmoil and are desirous of coming back and joining their families and mainstream. Addressing a press conference here today, the Ministers said Chief Minister had taken up the matter with the Central government so that the separated families are united and rehabilitated. They said the Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram, has endorsed the sincere effort made by Abdullah. Coming down heavily on PDP, Nasir Aslam said the party opposed a Private Member’s Resolution on the issue, which was moved by MLA MY Tarigami in the Legislative Assembly last time. However, he said, now all political parties, irrespective of party lines, should come forward to openly support the proposal of Chief Minister. “Even the Centre has accepted the Chief Minister’s idea of amnesty to Kashmiri youth who have crossed PoK and are desirous to come back. The youth across the LoC are craving to return home without weapons and join mainstream. We should give them an opportunity to come back and join us in ridding the state of the scourge of violence that has gripped us for more than two decades now,” the Minister added. Citing an instance, the Ministers said that as per reports, 2/3rd of the population of some of the border villages like Keran in Kupwara district have migrated to Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) after 1990 and there is a need to seriously think about their return and rehabilitation. Replying to a question regarding the number of migrated youth and families in PoK, the Ministers said a detailed exercise in this behalf will be carried out to know the exact figures. He said the modalities regarding their return would also be examined in due course of time, adding a comprehensive policy would be framed to address the issue, which will address all precautions and formalities required for their return and rehabilitation. Nasir Aslam, while replying to another question about return of Kashmiri Pandits, said the state government has already taken appropriate measures in this regard. A comprehensive policy is already in operation where under all necessary facilities shall be provided to the migrants who intend to return to Kashmir. While replying to another question of opening of Srinagar-Muzaffarabad Road, Nasir Aslam said that it was never a concept of PDP but understanding between India and Pakistan and PDP unnecessarily drumbeat to snatch the credit of opening the road.
