| HM commander, his deputy killed in Rajouri | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 12: The Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militant outfit today suffered a major jolt when its divisional commander and his deputy were shot dead by police and army in a joint gunbattle at Kallar Swari near Kandi Koteranka in Rajouri. Following intelligence inputs about the movement of HM divisional commander Mohammad Aslam alias Jaan Nissar of Kandi and his deputy Saddam Hussain, son of Raj Bakkarwal of Budhal, in and around Kallar Swari, police and troops of 48 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) cordoned off the village two days back, SSP (Rajouri) Shafqat Wattali said. He said all escape routes were plugged and ambushes laid by jawans in the village fields and at the openings of streets. The SSP said when the jawans were tightening their cordon today, they came to know that Jaan was hiding in the house of his uncle Munir Kasana at Kallar Swari along with Saddam. When the jawans were closing in on the house, the militants came out and fled in different directions. The jawans, however, chased them and killed both of them in brief encounters. One AK rifle, one carbine and a large quantity of ammunition and explosives were recovered from the encounter site. The SSP said Jaan's area of operation extended from Rajouri to Shopian in Kashmir. He was involved in the killing of militant-turned-BSF jawan Mohammad Arif, who had come home on leave, and his wife Malika Khatoon at their residence at Daraj in Rajouri in November last year. On June 26, 2009, he had shot dead Mohammad Latief and his wife Kulsam Begum at their residence at Kandi, suspecting them to be police informers. Wattali said Jaan's uncle Munir Kasana and other family members had been detained by police for questioning.
