| Time bound policy to improve industrial health: Wani | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 14
Congress leader and MLA Doda Abdul Majid Wani has drawn attention of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah towards the slack pace of industrial growth in the state, which could have, otherwise, contributed well in curbing the menace of unemployment and also improved the economy of the state. Wani said that poor industrial infrastructure along with the lackadaisical approach adopted by the state Industries & Commerce (I&C) Department is not going to help anymore. Strategic efforts are required to be made, on war footing, under this important ministry for improving health of industrial sector to achieve higher economic growth. He demanded that state I&C ministry should come out with a clear cut time bound policy and plans to involve local unemployed at large scale in manufacturing & processing activities in the state. Manufacturing and Processing Industry, if promoted, at a large scale, in this state could have absorbed 5-10 lakh people easily reducing pressure on job market especially dependence on government jobs. The state I&C Ministry should have approached central government, with appropriate projections, for financial assistance to set up mineral and timber based heavy industrial units in the state which could have generated employment in bulk, MLA further said Lamenting I&C ministry for maintaining silence over lack of industrial growth in erstwhile Doda district, the Congress leader said that despite demanded repeatedly, by people as well as the elected public representatives, for development of proper industrial infrastructure nothing concrete was done. With no substantial opportunities available in industrial sector, people are forced to migrate to capital cities in search of employment. Absence of industrial infrastructure; despite availability of raw material in abundance, have resulted in almost nil industrial growth in the area. Due to this reason, the majority of rural population of Doda, Ramban and Kishtwar districts, because of poverty, is still living in stone-age conditions.
