Mehbooba for holistic approach to resolve Kashmir issue
2/14/2010 10:45:49 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
POONCH, Feb 14:

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that after agreeing for general amnesty to Kashmiri militants the Government of India should initiate action for implementation of recommendations like revocation of Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) and reduction of troops to build a congenial atmosphere in the State.

Addressing a civil society seminar on Self Rule in Poonch, Mehbooba Mufti, PDP president said a holistic approach to resolve the Kashmir issue cannot be delayed anymore.
She said with Indo Pak dialogue again on the track it needed to be complemented with action on the internal front too as envisioned in Self Rule to induce confidence among the people of the state.
“Without perceptible relief on these fronts to the people who have suffered for decades credibility will elude the peace process,” she stressed and added, “We cannot solve the Kashmir issue through a piecemeal attitude or isolated legislative action.”
She claimed that the PDP under the leadership of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had set a new trend by channelizing political aspirations of people even while in power and mainstream which made it easy for others like NC to toe the line.
“This historic shift in the state politics, she said, has had a profound impact and it is no more a taboo for any government leader to talk of resolution.
The PDP president said that it was time for all the political forces in the state to strive for relief to the people who were once again the victims of wanton government power, apathy on developmental front and employment.
She said instead of trying to capitalize on small progresses registered on the strength of people’s sacrifices, the government should try to improve governance and set its own house in order.
The PDP chief also stressed on the need of opening all borders for the socio-economic growth of the State and added that this document favours opening all traditional routes.
Party vice-president Trilok Singh Bajwa, general secretary Balbir Singh, Murtaza Khan, Shanti Devi, A K Sawhney, Hamid Manhas, Iqbal Bandey and others also spoke on the occasion.
