BJP, JKNPP for abandoning of talks, amnesty proposal
2/14/2010 10:46:05 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 14

In the backdrop of yesterday’s blast in Pune that claimed lives of ten persons, leaders of different state political outfits supporting resumption of Indo-Pak talks and granting general amnesty to Kashmiri militants are in quandary over the practicality of such issues.
The leaders belonging to the National Conference, PDP, CPI(M) and a section of the valley based Congressmen fear that the plan of granting amnesty to the Kashmiri boys willing to join to mainstream may get delayed in view of such incidents.
Nizam-ud-Din Bhat, a senior PDP leader said that both the government in Delhi as well as in Jammu and Kashmir should not be influenced by the Pune blast which was the handiwork of those trying to detabilise peace and confidence building measures. However, the Jammu based political leaders including BJP and JKNPP have opposed any plan on the part of Union Government to grant general amnesty to those Kashmiri ultras who wish to return from occupied Kashmir to the valley without weapons.
Harsh Dev Singh, working chairman of the Panthers Party, said that plan of granting amnesty to Kashmiri militants could prove a “misadventure”.
He said that the Government should collect a dosier on each Kashmiri boy who had crossed over to occupied Kashmir for arms training in order to find out the level of crimes they had committed.
The JKNPP leader was supported by the BJP leader, Ashok Khajuria who said that the saffron brigade plans to stage massive demonstrations against the amnesty plan. Khajuria said that amnesty to these ultras would mean easy infiltration of militants into the State.
Both the leaders, however, said that the idea floated by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was nothing but a repetition of the idea having floated by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed five years ago.
They alleged that the NC and the PDP leaders are trying to keep their vote banks in the Kashmir valley intact by supporting the return of Kashmiri militants.
