| Wajahat Chapter Closed! | | J&K to launch fresh hunt for CIC | | Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 14: The big buzz over the proposed high profile formal start to the transparency watchdog had though already fizzled out with inordinate delay in taking over by Wajahat Habibullah as state’s Chief Information Commissioner the last word has finally come today –Habibullah is not coming, at all. Presently Chief Information Commissioner India Wajahat Habibullah today expressed his inability to join the newly constituted Jammu and Kashmir State Information Commission as its chief citing the Centre's reservations in relieving him from the post. Following personal insistence from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Habibullah had given his consent in October last year to join as first Chief Information Commissioner of Jammu and Kashmir and this was being seen as a big ticket initiative of the Chief Minister towards realization of the election promise in a big way. Habibullah today called on chief minister Omar Abdullah in New Delhi to convey the message, prompting the state government to start a hunt for his alternative as the National Conference-Congress coalition is steadfast in setting up a RTI panel at the earliest. Habibullah had recently met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who advised him to reconsider his decision of joining the first Sate Information Commission of militancy torn Jammu and Kashmir, official sources said. Omar then decided that Jammu and Kashmir government withdrew its offer to Habibullah as he could not get the Centre's nod to relive him from the current position, leaving no option for the state but to look for other alternatives for the post. Habibullah, who will turn 65 in September this year, has just seven months left if he had taken up the new assignment in the state, the sources said. He had tendered his resignation in October to president Pratibha Patil.
