| BJP to gherao Chidambaram on Feb 17: Manhas | | ‘Amnesty to militants will have grave security repercussions’ | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 15
As the proposal of general amnesty to Kashmiri militants has started to gather political fury of dissent parties here, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today described the move as “dangerous steps” fraught with grave security repercussions. “The move of the Union Government in collaboration with the State government to facilitate return and rehabilitation of the militants is a dangerous step with grave security repercussions. It would only make anti-national activities lucrative,” Shamsher Singh Manhas, BJP state president told reporters here. He alleged that it would also encourage and raise the morale of “anti-national” elements and demoralize the security forces and nationalist people in the state. “The BJP was never against any dialogue with the neighbouring country but it did not succumb to any external pressure or compromise on the sovereignty of the country over Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, adding “It was the UPA government which suspended talks with Pakistan after 26/11 with the condition to restart the same only when perpetrators of Mumbai attacks sitting in Pakistan were punished.” He said, “One concession after other to separatists and militants exposes the weak foreign policy and lack of determination to confront the anti-national forces decisively and resolutely.” Taking a strong exception to the ensuing visit of Union Home Minister, P Chidambaram, the BJP state chief said that senior party leaders along with 11 MLAs and party activists to be led by Leader of BJP Legislature Party, Chaman Lal Gupta would gherao Chidambaram on February 17, who is, he said, coming to work out the modalities for return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri militants. He further said that the party has also taken strong note of the scheduled Foreign Secretary level talks to be resumed on February 25 on Kashmir issue and disclosed that the party has decided to organize nation-wide programmes to educate the people of the grave implications and the dangers inherent in this policy of the UPA. He said that the BJP national president, Nitin Gadkari would address a massive public rally at Jammu on February 25.
