Getting Dogri on celluloid –nothing artistic about it
CONCERN

EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, Feb 15: It is only to keep their artistic pursuits get going that they have to perform in Dogri serials and telefilms, otherwise alternate openings are completely wanting in these endeavors which could ever fetch them any worthy chance to compete in the film world, say busiest stars of Jammu artistic cadre.
They also say that whatever is being attempted on the state panorama regarding promotion of Dogri through films and serials is just exploitation by some self-styled producers and directors having indecent liaison at different levels that secure handsome amount on the promotion of Language and execute it through an insignificant puppetry.
“We are made the scapegoats on the altar of such puppetry while assuring us the greener pastures in the deal by these producers who on many occasion even deny paying for our performances,” said one of the leading telefilm artist of Jammu requesting anonymity.
The anonymity requested stood the reason because the artist admitted that ‘acting in tele serials and telefilms is only source of livelihood which could not be dared to be sacrificed on the altar of truth.
Some of them also lament that the recent trend in vogue about directors and producers coming from Mumbai for auditions is another fake drama being enacted by some locals in connivance with these aliens who just come to trap the gullible artists into their glamorous jugglery.
Since no serious effort is being made by the people to undertake ventures in Dogri, all attempts made by a handful few go unnoticed and unappreciated. Another fluke in the system is that they are quite often told that a particular movie would be premiered in the reputed multiplexes of the region so that the local artists could get recognition and appreciation in the Dogra artistry, but such ventures showcased in the peripheral and rural villages here generally phase out into the oblivion without any ado.
Some were also quite vocal over the payment irregularities done by many producers. The new entrants into the field of the art however have no such lament as the other senior artists have but they too are very conscious on their career pursuit in the art field in Jammu.
They say that performance in teleserials and films, be it of Dogri or any other language, is their professional need to expose their talent at the national panorama. “Every other actor’s final quest is Bollywood and if they fall behind in maintaining that standard, they would be losers at all ends,” said Harmeet, a budding artist of stage and telefilm world.
They did not find any fault in Dogri and express hope that language may get the same boost as the other like Bhojpuri and Punjabi have got.
Some others as producer with Jammu and Kashmir Doordarshan boast of having identified their artistic talent through the Dogri language here , besides being from Kashmir origin.

“There is a great in-depth in the dialect that needs to be religiously explored through the ace hands. If films in Punjabi and Bhojpuri can create a niche in the tinsel world, Dogri has an exceptional charisma that can attract audience at any level, opines Kusum Tickoo, the senior most celluloid artist and private producer with Jammu Doordarshan. She denies any language barrier hindering her performance in Dogri.
Some being the best actor awardees of the state on stage performance refuse to divulge on the sellers and buyers of the Dogri product. They also prefer silence over a question fielded on the chance of Jammu artists making it big in the Bollywood through Dogri platform as Bhojpuri and Punjabis have done.
However since one attempt in Dogri movie making some 40 years ago bombed on box office in urban Jammu, would the others touring the rural Jammu resurrect the broken image remains a million dollars question.
