| NSUI accuses coalition of neglecting Gujjars, Paharis | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 16
National Student Union of India (NSUI) today castigated the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu Varun Sahni, for “neglecting” the border belt of Poonch particularly in higher education sector. Addressing media persons here, Shahnawaz Choudhary, national general secretary NSUI, said that though the Jammu University had inaugurated main University campus for Poonch and satellite campus for Surankote two years ago, yet the campus is being run in only one room of the Government Degree College, Poonch. “For namesake e-learning are being run in these campuses while other campuses in Kathua, Ramnagar and Bhaderwah of Jammu University are fully functional and offering the course like MBA, MCA etc,” he said. The NSUI also criticized the Government and Jammu University especially Vice Chancellor for meeting out “step-motherly” treatment to Gujjar and Pahari people of their long pending demand of opening a Gojri and Pahari Research Centre in the varsity. He said that the University council two years ago had given an approval for the establishment of Gojri and Pahari Research Centre at Jammu University and even a senior Professor from Department of Urdu was made his nodal officer. “It is unfortunate that despite of repeated reminders and meetings with Vice Chancellor, no progress has been made in this direction,” he said and termed this negative attitude of Jammu University as “unfortunate” towards Gujjar and Pahari communities. He alleged that a deliberate attempt is been made to silence the voice of these people of border district of Poonch and Rajouri. Shahnawaz said that he had recently in the meeting with the Union HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal and senior Gujjar leader and Union Minister Sachin Pilot had apprised them about these development and sort their intervention for getting the Gojri and Pahari Centre established in Jammu University. He cautioned that if these demands are not fulfilled shortly, the NSUI would hold protest in Poonch and Jammu. He also appealed the Chief Minister to announce special employment package for the youth of the border belt of Poonch.
