| Day 1: Employees strike paralyses work in government deptts | | | EARLY TIMES REPROT JAMMU, Feb 16
On first day of two-day-long token strike call given by the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC), normal work in Government departments and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) got crippled as thousands of employees remained away from their duties across the State today The employees in different departments and PSUs struck their work demanding implementation of agreement reached between representatives of employees and government in letter and spirit. Besides, medical services in all Government hospitals particularly Government Medical College and Hospital Jammu also affected as the employees did not turn up to attend their routine work. The patients from far-off places had a tough time in hospitals. However, the emergency units were exempted from the strike. The EJAC and its sister organisations have called for two days token strike to protest against the “dilly-dallying” tactics of the ruling dispensation vis-à-vis implementation of agreement signed between their representatives and government functionaries last year. Reports said that the protest demonstrations were held at all district headquarters where employees raised anti-administration.
The EJAC leaders cautioned that it has unanimously been decided to carry the ongoing struggle to its logical conclusion and impressed upon the government to avoid confrontation and not to test the patience of government employees. The leaders claimed that the work in all Government and PSUs remained paralyzed at all district headquarters, tehsil and block level. They criticized the state government for backtracking from its commitment and agreement made with the JCC members on August 19, 2009 by not considering the agreed demands of employees. The protesting employees also warned the Government against “anti-employees” and “anti-worker” attitude and made a fervent appeal to immediately fulfill the demands of employees. The employees have been demanding release of arrears of Sixth Pay Commission in favour of Government and PSU's employees and pensioners with effect from January 1, 2006, release of pending 5 per cent HRA, issuance of order for regularization of all temporary, ad hoc, consolidate, contractual employees and daily rated workers before and after 1994, removal of pay anomalies of various cadres, enhancement of retirement age from 58 to 60 years as per commitment, conversion of Cola into DA of PSU employees and enhancement of wages of Anganwari workers and helpers.
