2/16/2010 10:01:00 PM
Early times report
Jammu, Feb 16: Marriage of Kiran Kumari and Suram Chand was solemnized on 17-04-2002 according to Hindu rites and rituals. Soon after one week of marriage the husband of Kiran Kumari and all the members of his family started demanding more dowry including cash from her parents on one pretext or the other and when her parents showed their inability to concede to the demand her husband threw her out of her matrimonial home and for the last three years she had been staying with her mother as her father had died in accident.
During this period neither her husband came to bring her to the matrimonial home nor had he paid any penny to her for her maintenance. Instead her husband had performed second marriage. The matter when reached the J&K Batwal Welfare Association, the association called the couple at a meeting held at Shahzadpur Kothi. After discussing the case threadbare, the association resolved, “There seems to be no scope of reunion of the married couple, as such the husband Suram Chand shall give Rs. 100,000 (Rupees one lakh only) as compensation to his wife Kiran Kumari and after he does so, their marriage solemnized on 17-04-2002 would get dissolved and they would be at liberty to remarry”. The people accented this decision of the association and accordingly Suram Chand handed in the amount so fixed by the association to Kiran Kumari. The prominent among those who were present in the meeting including ex MLA Sat Pal Lakhotra, RL Kaith, Om Prakash Tugga, Capt. Raj Kumar Kaith, Capt Ram Lal Lakhotra, Sub. Ghasita Ram Lakhotra, Sarpanch Punnu Ram Kaith, Kamal Singh and others.
