| Asia to be the Centre of world politics: Dr Alagappa | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 18: “Asia is going to be the centre of world politics in the current century,” opined Dr Muthiah Alagappa, distinguished senior fellow, East-West Centre, Washington DC. He stated this while delivering the inaugural lecture of the Brigadier Mohammad Usman Lectures on Strategy and World Politics today organised by the Department of Strategic and Regional Studies (DSRS), University of Jammu on the topic “The Changing International Dynamics in Asia” at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium. Major General K Surendranath, GOC, 26 Infantry Division was the guest of honour in the function while Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu presided over the inaugural lecture. According to Dr. Alagappa, the subordinate position of Asia during the Cold War period is now part of history. “As of now, 20 to 30 percent of World GDP is produced in Asia and it will continue to increase further in the future. The economic prosperity in Asia during the last two decades has resulted in positive interdependence and stability in the continent,” he maintained. Dr. Alagappa further emphasized that the emerging balance of power dynamics in Asia is revolving around the relations between China and the US. “Apart from China, India, Japan and ASEAN courtiers, the US is going to play a major role in the international dynamics in Asia. The improved relations between India and the US have made fundamental changes in Chinese perception towards India and this would lead to a new dynamics in the India-China relations,” he said. Major General K. Surendranath, in his remarks, pointed out that economic progress in Asia during the last two decades has led to stability in the continent and this will further lead to overall development and progress of the continent. In his presidential remarks, Professor Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu said that there is a distinction between China and India in terms of development and progress. “China is rising while India is emerging,” he said. According to him the basic political reality in Asia at the moment is sovereign territoriality since the continent is in the process of experiencing political modernity. Earlier, Dr. Mathew Joseph C. Director (in Charge), DSRS welcomed the gathering while Colonel S.S. Blouria, Scholar-in-Residence, General Zorawar Singh Chair of Excellence, DSRS proposed vote of thanks.
