| Zahid case: Court records | | BSF trooper’s statement | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Feb 19: The Chief Judicial Magistrate today recorded the statement of a BSF trooper, an accused in the murder of a Nishat youth. The court also remanded him to police custody till February as co-ordination committee Nishat demanded arrest of a BSF commandant. Identified as Lakhwinder Singh of 68 BN, the accused and his two associates were produced in the court of CJM this afternoon amid tight security. Justifying the application for further remand, the police told the court that the investigation in Zahid murder case had reached a critical phase. “Lakhwinder and his associates have made some sensational statements. Further remand, therefore, is required to complete the investigation”, the police requested. Meanwhile Lakhwinder Singh got his statement recorded in the court. The court also recorded the statement of a BSF official who was in charge of arms and ammunition on Ferbruary 5 when Zahid was shot dead. The court reportedly asked him how many bullets had been issued to Lakhwinder on that day and how many had he deposited in the evening. The coordination committee Nishat, a body formed by the Nishat people to bring the erring BSF personnel to justice told media persons that the failure of police to arrest the BSF commandant was shocking. “Lakhwinder has said that he fired the fatal bullet at his directions. He must be arrested as soon as possible”, the committee said. The police have seized three BSF vehicles and the weapon that fired the killer bullet.
