| Akhoon takes stock of PDS, transport network in Poonch, Rajouri | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Feb 20: Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution and Transport, Qamar Ali Akhoon, who is on tour of twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri has sought active cooperation of people in general and administration in particular to improve the Public Distribution System (PDS) in serving remote pockets of the State. The Minister convened meeting of officers of the CA&PD and Transport at both the districts and took stock of availability and supply of food-grains and other essentials like Kerosene oil, cooking gas and transport network. At Poonch, the meeting was told that a survey of 178 villages has been conducted where free ration for three months is being provided through PDS, as drought relief covering nearly one lakh families of the district. At Rajouri, it was informed that 385 villages were identified for free ration for three months, which the Minister approved. The Minister instructed that rate lists of all commodities like rice, wheat, sugar, k.oil be displayed at offices of TSOs and sale outlets. He further said that sugar 700 gms per head of each card holder and 5 liter of k.oil per ration card monthly would be provided to the rationees. He directed committees comprising Tehsildar, SHO, TSO and prominent citizens of the locality would ensure proper distribution of supply in their respective jurisdictions. He said steps are being taken to open new cooking gas agencies in the areas for covering at least 400 families each. He stressed for intensifying market checking drive against profiteers and hoarders at district, tehsil and block level. He instructed the CA&PD officers that the lists of BPL rationees be provided to local MLAs and MLCs for verification and authentication. Akhoon announced that Poonch-Jammu and Jammu-Rajouri SRTC bus services would be restored immediately whereas SRTC bus from Balnoi to Jammu via Mendhar would also be considered. He said that the number of SRTC buses would be increased in hilly districts to facilitate the commuters. He asked the district administrations to convene meeting of line officers to chalk out transport network, identifying new routes, and permits to be issued to matador and sumo operators for effective transport services. He asked the youth to come forward and apply for new permits for plying their passenger vehicles in their localities to curb over-loading. He asked the traffic police to discourage over-loading strictly. Akhoon also inaugurated 1st G.M. Jan Memorial Cricket Tournament at Poonch, in which 20 teams are participating.
