| 1,000 kg poppy straw seized at Lakhanpur | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 20: In their special drive against smugglers and tax evaders, sleuths of excise department today seized 1,000 kilograms of poppy straw at Lakhanpur and 955 bottles of the banned Rexocod syrup at Nagri. Official sources said a truck (JK03B/4585) was put to physical verification at the Lakhanpur toll post while it was on its way from Pulwama, Kashmir, to outside the state. During checking, the sleuths of excise department recovered 165 corrugated boxes of poppy straw, which were concealed beneath apple boxes. Sources said the seized contraband and the vehicle were handed over to Inspector Excise, sub-range, Kathua, for action under NDPS Act. Another party of the department seized 955 bottles of Rexocod syrup (Codeine Phosphate) from a truck (JK03A/7372) at the Nagri Parole toll post. Loaded with fresh fruit, the truck was on its way from Delhi to Anantnag. The seized drugs ad four accused -- Javed Ahmed of Harnag, Imtiaz Ahmed of Dachipura, Shopian, Javed Ahmed of Hargam and Rouf Ahmed of Shopian were handed over to the Assistant Controller Drugs, Kathua, for action under law. Deputy Excise Commissioner Bashir Ahmed Saraf has appreciated the commendable role of the staff and warned smugglers and tax evaders of stern action if they did not desist from such kind of illegal activities.
