| Top Pak HM commander killed ,two SPOs injured | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 20: A top militant and Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) divisional commander was shot dead by special operation group (SOG) of police and 8 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) in a gunbattle in the densely forested Hunder-Sonitop mountains of Gool in Ramban district late Friday night. The slain militant -- Mohammad Iqbal Alam alias Abu Bakkar of Federal – B Area, Dastgeer, Karachi in Pakistan – had infiltrated into India from across the Line of Control (LoC) over eight years back. Police sources said he was involved in the killing of innocent civilians, attacks on security forces and several other militancy related incidents in Gool and Reasi. His movement was picked up by some police "informers" near Gool Friday evening. They brought the matter to the notice of SOG, which immediately swung into action and launched an operation in search for the militant. Sources said seeing the cops following him, he fled into the forests. To circumvent his contact with the chasing cops, he fled towards Arnas in Reasi district following which the SOG unit of Arnas was also put on alert. Sourc es said he was cordoned off by the two SOGs at about 10.30 pm and killed in an exchange of fire that lasted about 30 minutes. Two special police officers (SPOs) -- Mukhtiar Ahmad and Mohammad Ashraf -- also sustained injuries in legs and shoulders in the encounter. They were evacuated to a local hospital from where they were referred to the Government Medical College Hospital here for advanced treatment. Their ondition was stated to be out of danger.One AK rifle, its four magazines, 90 rounds, one radio set, two mobile sets, one binocular, one Chinese grenade and 23,786 Indian currency notes were recovered from the slain militant. He was all alone at the time of the encounter, the sources added. Sources said last year, a large quantity of arms and ammunition, which he had concealed at Jabber Mahakund in Gool, was recovered by security forces.
