| 12 Cops among 60 injured in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Feb 21: At least sixty persons including 12 police men sustained injuries in violent clashes across Kashmir Sunday. The clashes affected normal life in Srinagar, Sopore and Baramulla towns.
Violent demonstrations were held in Maisuma and down town area of Srinagar today against arrest of youth during nocturnal raids by the police.
At Maisuma and down town, youth torched worn out tyres and pelted stones on the police and the CRPF personnel. A large number of women also participated in the protests at Maisuma.
According to reports, a group of youth assembled in Sopore Chowk this morning and raised slogans against the police. They accused the police of effecting arrest of scores of youth from different localities of the town.
Later the youth marched in a procession towards the police station. The police responded by cane charge and tear smoke shells. The use of force angered the youth who attacked a CRPF picket housed in State Bank of India building. The CRPF personnel opened fire. Fifty persons including 10 police men sustained injuries in the police action.
Demonstrations were held at Bomai Sopore as well to protest government’s failure of bringing the killers of four cricket playing youth to justice. The youth were killed on February 21, 2006.
Baramulla town had a similar story to tell. The police fired rubber bullets on the protesters causing critical injury to a youth. He was rushed to SKIMS where he is battling for life. The day long clashes disrupted normal life in the town
