| Akhnoor borders back to the usual business: heroin, opium worth Rs 76 Cr seized, 2 held | | Consignment was brought to Indian side by Pak smugglers | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 21: With army today seizing 15 kg heroin worth Rs 75 cr and 1 kg opium worth Rs 1 cr from two smugglers near the International Border (IB) at Hamirpur in Khour, Akhnoor, the state seems to be emerging as a safe transit point for drug peddlers, a fact that has acquired sharp focus since the arrest of senior J&K cadre IPS officer last year on drug smuggling charges.
The consignment was brought to this side by Pak smugglers and handed over to the two arrested Khour residents, according to police sources.
Astonishingly, the Pak smugglers crossed the border despite a tight security after the recent infiltration bids.
During the last one year, heroin, charas and over 2,000 kg poppy straw were seized from different parts of the state. Sources said with links of the well-oiled drug peddling racket in the state being established with people in neighbouring Pakistan and Afghanistan, where the heroin originates, security agencies were keeping track on the activities of drug smugglers in the state, especially in border areas.
A defence spokesman said troops of Crossed Swords Division noticed two persons moving under suspicious circumstances across the border fencing Saturday at about 5 pm.
However, they fled when they saw the troops. The spokesman said after a hot chase, one of them was apprehended while the other managed to escape the cordon and hide the bag he was carrying. He too was later apprehended near the fence gate, he added.
They were identified as Yashpal Sharma (32) and Arjun Singh (18), both residents of Khour.
The spokesman said said as the search of the area was called off Saturday due to darkness, searches carried out this morning led troops to the recovery of a bag concealed in a dug-out.
Fifteen sealed packets of heroin and one of opium were recovered from the bag. As per police officials, the price of heroin was approximately Rs 5 cr per kg in the international market. The spokesman said Yashpal was a known smuggler of the area.
Both of them were later handed over to police, he added. Most of the heroin, cocaine and other drugs are meant for lucrative markets in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and other places.
