JAMMU: Department of Geology, University of Jammu, organises 2-days National Seminar on sedimentation, tectonics and hydrocarbon potential in Himalayan Foreland Basin on February 22-23. Main focus of the National Seminar is on the resource potential of Himalayan Foreland Basin particularly hydrocarbon potential, mineral resources, water resources and conservation, natural hazards including landslides, earthquakes, etc. The seminar is being organized under the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) sanctioned by University Grants Commission to the Geology Department.
Dr. B. K. Bansal, Advisor, Seismology Division, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India was the Chief Guest at the inaugural function. N. K. Verma, Gen. Manager (Geology) - Basin Manager, Frontier Basins, ONGC, Dehradun was Guest of Honour and Prof. N. A. Ganai, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu presided over the inauguration function. Dr. Bansal stressed for multidisciplinary and multi-institutional approach by geoscientists to evolve measures and models for the prediction of earthquakes. He emphasized the need for seismic microzonation of all the cities and towns to understand the vulnerability of the area to the earthquake hazards and for retrofitting the existing structures and buildings. N. K. Verma deliberated upon the potential of Himalayan Foreland Basin for the hydrocarbon. He told the there is a need that the recommendations of the various geoscientist bodies are taken into consideration for policy making in the exploration of hydrocarbons. Dr. V. C. Goyal made a detailed presentation about the status of the water resources in the Kandi Belt of Jammu and Kashmir.
