| Life consuming disease ‘Cancer’ kills 15 people in a Rajouri village | | Doctors say, detailed investigation needs, villagers terrorised | |
SHAFIQ MIR Rajouri, February 22 About 15 Kms north of district headquarter Rajouri under the jurisdiction of tehsil Thananmandi, there is a village in which the inhabitants have lost hope in life because they have developed a belief to die in the age of 40 . In the last one decade , the inhabitants of the village have lost at least 15 people due to ‘ throat cancer’ and one more is struggling with the same life consuming disease at present . Doctors say detailed investigation needs to find out the reason behind the throat cancer in a particular hamlet . Sources said, in a particular hamlet namely (Meera) of village Khablan in tehsil Thanamandi , at least 15 people have lost their lives during the past one an half decade. And all of them died due to throat cancer . Most of the people who died due to throat cancer were around 40 years old baring few cases of 60 to 70 . The latest case involved in the throat cancer has been identified as Abdul Hameed (40) son of Ghulam –Mohi-u-Din. Sources said, the life consuming disease entered this village some two decades ago and one Mirza Fazal Hussain was the first causality of cancer in the village . After the gap of about five years , the life consuming disease killed at least one person every year in the radius of 100 meters . Head of the village (Lamberdar) Ghulam Nabi Mir says at least 15 people have died in a particular hamlet due to throat cancer in the past one and half decade . All those who lost their lives have been identified as , Fazeli Baegum wife of Ghulam Mohidin (40 years), Abdul Rehman son of Qadir Mir, Mohammad Bashir son of Abdul Rehman (20) , Said Begum wife of Fazal Hussain , Zoon Begum wife of Abdul Sattar, Ghulam Ahmed Mir son of Abdul Sattar, Mukhtaar Begum alias Mukhti wife of Abdul Rahim Dar, Abdul Rahim Dar son of Abdullah Dar, Ghulam Nabi son of Abdullah Dar , Rashida Begum wife of Ghulam Nabi Dar. When contacted Dr. Jameel Khan physician specialist (MD) at district hospital Rajouri he says if the report is correct then it needs detailed study to find out the food habits and other reasons responsible for the disease in a particular hamlet. He says before making any final comment on the issue, there is need of a detailed study .
Head of the village Lamberdar Ghulam Nabi, says most of the people who died in this particular hamlet with in the radius of 100 meters were in the age group of 35 to 50 and all were diagnosed throat cancer by the doctors . “ There is a sense of insecurity prevailing in the rest of the people in this particular hamlet that they will not survive more than forty years”, adding that the incidence took place with in the radius of hundred meters which is some thing alarming and needs immediate investigation by the experts . He says , the latest case diagnosed throat cancer identified as Abdul Hameed was also touching 40 years of age and is presently struggling with the life . The unfortunate part of the people is that they all were a labour class and were not in position to fight or treat this costly disease , said Gulam Nabi . “ On behalf of all my villagers I make an appeal to chief minister Omer Abdullah to send a special team of doctors in the village to find out the main reason behind this life consuming disease . Moreover, government should also make an arrangement for their free of cost treatment because the victims are hardly hand to mouth”, he said .
