JAMMU, Feb 23

Demanding their regularization, Contractual lecturers and teaching assistants working in different colleges of Jammu Province went on a mass casual leave and demonstrated in front of the office of Nodal Officer at Government Gandhi Memorial (GGM) Science College here today.
Shouting anti government slogans, the demonstrators led by President, Contractual Lecturers Association, Prof Suresh Sadotra criticized the government for allegedly adopting dilly dallying tactics.

Speaking on the occasion, Sadotra said that contractual employees working in all other departments are being regularized but no action initiated with respect to contractual college teachers despite assurances from Chief Minister and Higher Education Minister, he alleged.
He mentioned that state government has regularized contractual lecturers working in different colleges in the year 2003 on selective basis.
The protesters criticized some officers of Higher Education Department for not giving salary to contractual college lecturers even after the lapse of eight months. The association requested Minister for Higher Education Minister to constitute a committee to ascertain the reasons for such delay and take action against the guilty. They also took to task the principals of various colleges for not raising the voice of their employees.
Protesting contractual lecturers demanded enhancement of salary to Rs 21,600 with effect from August 2009 and release of pending wages since August 2009.
A memorandum was also submitted to Principal, GGM Science College to be forwarded to Minister for Higher Education Abdul Ghani Malik.
Reports said that similar demonstrations were also held at Rajouri, Poonch, Kathua, Udhampur and all other districts of Jammu province.
