| NC choking Opposition’s voice: Mehbooba | | |
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Feb 24: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti today accused the ruling National Conference-Congress alliance of being “autocratic” as it is trying to “choke the voice of the opposition and people”.
“The ruling National Conference has made a mockery of the highest institution of the Legislative Assembly by choking the voice of the opposition by adopting undemocratic means. The Government is not only trying to choke the voice of the opposition but also choking the voice of the people,” Mehbooba told reporters soon after staging walk out from Lower House this morning.
The furious PDP chief said, “We have been asking the Government for discussion over the killings of youth in Kashmir Valley for the last 2-3 days but unfortunately the Government has adopted an autocratic attitude which is not going to help anybody.”
Blaming that there was “no space for the opposition to raise issues of public importance,” she alleged, “Inside the House, the opposition is not allowed to raise important issues while outside the Assembly, the anger of people is suppressed through bullets, teargas shells and cane charge.”
“Not only the opposition parties, this regime is even trying to pressurize media against highlighting ground realities,” she charged.
“Their behaviour is adding fuel to the fire. If they have allowed us for discussion, it might have improved the situation,” she asserted.
The Leader of Opposition said, “You need to give vent to the situation so that people feel that their issues are being raised in the Assembly.”
“The way the functioning of the assembly is going on, it is better to hold proceedings either in the residence of National Conference leaders or in the office of the ruling party as there is no space for opposition to raise issues of public importance,” she further said.
Taking a cue from the ongoing Budget Session in Parliament, she said, “As we have seen in the Parliament, there are priorities. The discussion over the President’s address has been postponed for having discussion over price hike. Why don’t the ruling National Conference take the issue of human rights violation on priority?”
“In the 43-day long session, the government can do routine business any time but the issue relating to the lives of innocent people should be given priority,” she added.
She alleged that Omar led Government has “myopic outlook” and it would further deteriorate the already “volatile” situation in Kashmir Valley.
Mehbooba apprehended that “something very fishy is going on in the garb of giving hype to stone pelting issue.”
